Class 4A state champion New Albany completed an unbeaten season with a 41-34 triumph over Class 3A champ NorthWood in the title game of the Second Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament of Champions on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Bulldogs, who finished 28-0, received 21 points from senior guard Kennitra Johnson and 12 points from junior guard Abigail Scharlow as New Albany joined a distinguished list of teams to finish a season undefeated. Previous unbeatens were Warsaw (1976, 1978), East Chicago Roosevelt (1977, 1979), Crown Point (1984), Fort Wayne Northrop (1986), Noblesville (1987), Bedford North Lawrence (1991) and Martinsville (1998). New Albany also follows Martinsville as the second Class 4A team to win the Tournament of Champions. The Artesians, who finished 29-0 a year ago, defeated Bloomfield, 89-45, and Southridge, 74-61, on their way to last year's title. Coached by Angie Hinton, New Albany led from start to finish getting off to a 13-4 lead at the first break, 19-12 at halftime and 35-28 at the end of the third period. The Bulldogs led by as many as 11 at 19-8 with 4:24 left in the second period. With 4:26 remaining in the game, NorthWood cut the lead to 37-34 on a layup by sophomore forward Kasey Chamberlin but that would be the last bucket scored by the Panthers as New Albany closed the game out by hitting four of six free throws. New Albany's defense forced NorthWood into 20 turnovers and senior center Jessica Dablow blocked six Panther shots. Senior guard Natalie Will led the way for NorthWood with 14 points, while Chamberlin finished with 10. Freshman center Carol Duncan pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Panthers. NorthWood, coached by Steve Neff, finished the season 25-4.
