Number one ranked Kokomo, coached by Mike McCroskey, scrambled from behind to defeat number two ranked Bedford North Lawrence, 50-47, in the 17th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Finals Tournament. The tournament was held at Market Square Arena on February 29, 1992. The Lady Kats were down by as many as 11 points on three separate occasions. Kokomo trailed by a 28-18 score at half-time, and Bedford North Lawrence still hung on to a 38-32 lead at the end of three quarters. Junior guards Tiffanny Longworth and Mistina Oliver were the heroines for the Lady Kats as the two combined to score 37 points for Kokomo and set the scene for their second-half comeback. Longworth led the scoring with 19 points and five steals, and Oliver added 18 points and four thefts. With Bedford North Lawrence holding a 42-34 lead early in the fourth quarter, Longworth scored six straight points, and Oliver twisted inside for a five-foot bank shot to tie the score at 42-42 with 5:52 remaining. It was tied again at 44 until Debbie Benziger put the Kats on top 46-44 at the four-minute mark with a steal. Marla Inmann of Bedford North Lawrence then hit a three pointer to put the lead for Kokomo at 48-47. Longworth then hit a tough lay-up in traffic at the 52-second mark that eventually sealed the victory for Kokomo. Marla Inmann and Amy Lynch each scored 15 points in the tough defeat for the Stars. Jessica Stancombe ended her season in a strong supporting role with 13 points. Stancombe got 10 of her 13 points in the first half when the Stars took a 10-point lead. The loss marked the end of a 55-game winning streak for Bedford North Lawrence who ended their season with a fine 25-1 record. In the first semi-final contest of the day, Bedford North Lawrence defeated Ben Davis 62-57 in overtime. It was a nip-and-tuck game all the way as the Stars held slim leads of 17-16, 31-29 and 39-36 after the end of three quarters. Ben Davis went in front 47-46 with 3:03 to go in the fourth quarter. Jessica Stancombe then hit a lay-up to put the Stars ahead 48-47. Two pressure baskets by Lady Giant Bonnie Lovins in the closing seconds sent the game into overtime at 53-53. Ben Davis lead briefly at 57-55 in the overtime before Stancombe came through with five straight points for the Stars to seal the victory. Inmann scored her 31 points on 9-15 from the field and 11-12 from the charity stripe. Stancombe rounded out the scoring for Bedford North Lawrence with 11 points. Lisa Malone lead the Lady Giants with 15 points followed by Lovins with 13 and Stacey Mondino with 12. Ben Davis closed out the season with a 24-3 record. In the second contest of the afternoon, Kokomo downed Valparaiso 52-36. Kokomo was lead by Tiffany Longworth with 21 points. The Lady Kats led only 25-24 at half-time, but its sticky defense in the second half shut down the inside game for the Lady Vikes who scored just 12 points in the last half. Lisa Furlin closed the game with 16 points followed by Alana Hancock with 11. Valparaiso ended the season with a fine 26-2 record and a second straight appearance in the final four. The Executive Committee unanimously selected Marla Inman of Bedford North Lawrence High School as the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of the IHSAA presented a $1,000 scholarship to Bedford North Lawrence High School in her name. A total of 379 schools and 4,419 participants began competition at the sectional level.
