Kamie Arnold and Diane Poulson combined for 33 points to lead Huntington North to a 50-47 victory over previously unbeaten Bedford North Lawrence lo capture the 15th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Finals Tournament held at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, on February 24, 1990. The Lady Vikings, coached by Fred Fields, earned their way to the title game with a 46-42 victory over Noblesville in the second semi-final game. Bedford North Lawrence defeated Anderson 53-43 in the first semi-final tilt to qualify for the championship game. Huntington North ended the season with a 26-4 record on its second consecutive trip to the state finals. Arnold, the Lady Vikings 6'2" center, scored 17 points and Poulson 16 as Huntington North outscored the favored Bedford North Lawrence contingent 13-5 in the third quarter to take a 33-26 lead. Late into the fourth quarter, the Stars pulled to within four at 42-38 on a jumper and two free throws by Amy Walker. With 45 seconds remaining, Huntington North held a 50-42 lead. However, Shannon Cummings hit a rebound basket, and Carrie Mount drilled a 3-pointer for the Stars to make it 50-47. After a time-out at the 13.6 second mark and a foul by Marcy Hiner, both Mount and Walker missed desperation 3-point shots at the buzzer to end the game. Walker scored 15 points and Cummings 14 for Bedford North Lawrence who had a perfect 25-0 record going into the state finals. In the first morning contest, Bedford North Lawrence pulled away from Anderson in the fourth quarter. The Stars were led by Amy Walker who scored 18 points, and Marla Inman canned 12. Anderson closed out a successful season with a 20-6 record and had good scoring balance from Sarah Armington with 13 points. Angela Cotton had 12, and Areatha Beard added 11 for the Lady Tribe. Huntington North made up a huge 29-15 deficit in the second half to defeat four-time state finalist Noblesville in the second game of the tourney. Topped by Arnold with 23 points and 16 rebounds, the Lady Vikings scored 24 straight points during the third and fourth quarters to take control. Monica Cox scored 10 points, and Jana Thompson had 9 for the Lady Millers who became the first school in the history of the tournament to reach the final four in four consecutive years. Noblesville ended the season with a fine 22-4 record. History was made in that hazardous road conditions, caused by a mixture of snow, ice and high winds, forced an estimated 700 fans, mostly from Huntington North who had traveled to the tournament in fan buses, to spend the night at Market Square Arena. The IHSAA Executive Committee unanimously selected Shannon Cummings of Bedford North Lawrence High School as the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. Farm Bureau Insurance, corporate sponsor of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Bedford North Lawrence in her name. A total of 381 schools and 4,435 participants began competition at the sectional level.
