Fort Wayne Northrop, coached by Dave Riley, turned back a stubborn Scottsburg team 58-55 to capture the 11th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Finals Tournament held at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis on March 1, 1986. The Bruins locked up the championship with a perfect 29-0 record behind outstanding performances by junior forwards Lori Meinerding and Jenny Bull. Meinerding contributed 22 points and 13 rebounds with 7-11 shooting from the field and 8-10 free throws. Bull provided strong support with 14 points and 8 rebounds. The Fort Wayne contingent took a commanding 34-23 halftime lead and led by 50-37 early in the third quarter. The Lady Bruins then fought off a gallant comeback effort by Scottsburg as the Warriorettes cut the lead to 53-51 with a little less than a minute to play. Scottsburg was led by center Leslie Ferrell who scored a game high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds before fouling out with 16 seconds remaining in the game. Cara Gullion also contributed to the Scottsburg cause, scoring 19 points. Scottsburg finished with a 24-3 record. Scottsburg earned their way into the final game by surviving a grueling battle with Gary Wallace 62-59. Gary Wallace was able to convert just 3 of 16 free throws, while the Warriorettes nailed 20 of 28 from the charity stripe. Shunte Gleason topped the Hornets scoring with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Scottsburg had a balanced attack with Tadgi DeBerg scoring 21, Cara Gullion tossing in 18 and LeslieFerrell adding 13. Gary Wallace finished the season with an outstanding 23-2 record. In the second afternoon game, Fort Wayne Northrop shut down a powerful Roncalli inside game and ran off 11 consecutive points in a three-minute time span of the third quarter to advance to the championship game with a 50-36 victory. The Bruins put four players in double figures. Lori Meinerding scored 15 with Jill Ramsey, Vanessa Williams and Jenny Bull each scoring 10. The Lady Rebels were led by senior Diane Hoereth who finished with a game high of 22 points. Roncalli closed out the season with a fine 22-5 record. Fort Wayne Northrop set a new state finals tourney record for most steals with 21 in the afternoon contest and 28 for the two games. The Bruins also tied the record for free throws attempted with 27 against Scottsburg in the final game. The Executive Committee unanimously selected Tadgi DeBerg of Scottsburg High School as the recipient of the coveted Mental Attitude Award. A total of 385 schools and 4,484 girls particpated in the state tournament series program.
