Coach Bill Green and the Marion Giants lived up to season-long notices by capturing their third straight championship in the 77th Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Boys Basketball State Finals Tournament at Market Square Arena, Indianapolis, on March 28, 1987. Marion upended North Central Conference rival Richmond, 69-56 in the championship game for the second time in three years. Green garnered up his sixth state championship -- no other Indiana high school basketball coach ever won more than four --and Marion equalled a state tournament record set by the famed Wonder Five ofFranklin with three straight championships in 1920-22. Green won his first state championship with Indianapolis Washington in 1 %9 and five more with Marion in 1975, 1976, 1985, 1986 and 1987. He has compiled an overall coaching record of 354-127 in 19 years. Jay Edwards and Lyndon Jones led the way for Marion in the championship game against Richmond. Edwards scored a game high 35 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Giants opened up a 32-23 lead at halftime and shot 57 percent from the field. Jones added 23 points and had six assists. Woody Austin led Richmond with 18 points, followed by Jerry Coleman with 15 and David Cruse with 14. Jones scored 27 and Edwards 22 in the Giants 70-61 afternoon win over a stubborn Bedford-North Lawrence ball club. Freshman standout Damon Bailey topped Bedford-North Lawrence with 20 points before fouling out at the 2:06 mark of the fourth quarter. The Stars trailed only 47-46 at the end of three quarters. Richmond advanced to the final game with a 66-60 comeback win over Gary Roosevelt in the second semi-final contest. Woody Austin tallied 25 and Jerry Coleman 19 for the Red Devils. Richmond, coached by George Griffith, wound up with a 25-5 record. Scotty Fields scored 24 for Gary Roosevelt who lost for only the third time in 27 games. The Executive Committee unanimously seleted Marvin Rea of Gary Roosevelt High School as the recipient of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude. A total of 388 schools and 4,608 boys participated in the tournament series program.
