Michelle Brand scored 31 points including 15 in the third quarter as Evansville Reitz, coached by Louise Owen, easily defeated Rushville 74-4 7 to capture the Sixth Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball Championship. The tourney was held at Market Square Arena on February 21, 1981. The key to the Evansville victory was the Panthers' defense. Reitz, which entered the final four unranked despite a 24-1 record, forced Rushville into 28 turnovers. Mylissa Morrow had 13 points to go with Brand's 31 for the State Champs. Reitz hit 33 of 78 floor attempts for 42 per cent. Melissa Kilgore was the leading scorer for Rushville with 15 points followed by 13 for Chante' Stiers. The Lions ended the season with a respectable 25-2 mark. Evansville Reitz held off a strong bid from second-ranked Marion while Rushville benefited from its own come-from-behind effort to advance to the final game. Reitz defeated previously unbeaten Marion, 55-46, while Rushville eliminated Chesterton, 70-64. The Executive Committee unanimously selected Susan Morris of Chesterton as the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. A total of 393 high schools and 4,586 girls participated in the state tournament series program.
