East Chicago Roosevelt, coached by Roberta DeKemper, kept pace with two-time winner Warsaw by locking up their second Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball Championship with an overwhelming victory over Madison Heights (Anderson) 48-23. The 4th annual tourney was held at Hinkle Fieldhouse on February 24, 1979. Senior La Taunya Pollard, who holds the tourney single game scoring record of 36 points, popped in a game high of 21 points in leading the Rough Riders to their second undefeated season in four years. Theresa Busch led the losers with 12 points as the Pirates ended the season with a 24-1 record and runner-up honors. East Chicago earned their way to the final game by defeating Jasper 53-23 in the morning game. Madison Heights squeezed by North Central (Indpls.) in the second semi-final game 48-47 on a free throw by Karen Hexamer with 9 seconds remaining on the clock. The Executive Committee unanimously selected Karen Bauer of Jasper as the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. A total of 385 high schools and 4,472 girls participated in the state tournament series program.
