Coach Janice Soyez's unbeaten Warsaw contingent shattered Bloomfield's 48-game perfect record with a 59-52 victory in the First Annual Indiana High School Athletic Association's Girls Basketball Championship held at Hinkle Fieldhouse on February 28, 1976. Sophomore Chanda Kline scored 19 points and her running mate Judi Warren scored 17 to set the tempo for the Tigers in the championship game. Warren sank 5 free throws in the last 64 seconds to ice the title for Warsaw. Bloomfield survived the toughest test of the afternoon round by knocking off Indianapolis Arsenal Technical in a 47-45 uphill thriller on a shot by Melissa Miles with just two seconds on the clock. Warsaw shot 61 percent in the second half to mow down unbeaten East Chicago Roosevelt 62-44 in the second afternoon game. The Board of Control unanimously selected Judi Warren of Warsaw as the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award. A total of 360 high schools and 4,320 girls participated in the sta te tournament series program.
