Evansville Bosse won its third state championship in the IHSAA 52nd annual basketball tournament. The Bulldogs won previous championships in 1943-44 and 1944-45. Bosse downed East Chicago Washington in the fiinal game by a score of 84-81. The Senators led throughout the early stages of the game but the Bulldogs came on with a rush in the fourth quarter and won the championship. Both teams exhibited superb marksmanship with Bosse shooting an incredible percentage of .531 and Washington shot .421. The first game in the afternoon was won by Bosse over Madison. The Bulldogs led the Cubs by a small margin at every stop and won by a 79-75 score. Washington defeated Kokomo, the defending state champion, in the second afternoon game. Kokomo built up a lead of 13 points during the second half but Washington stormed back to take the lead and held on to take a one-point victory, 74-73. Bobby Miles led all scorers with 32 points. All three games were hotly contested. The point spread for the three games was only 8 points. The last time there was any semblance of a comparable spread was in 1944 when the total spread was 11 points. There was a loss of 26 schools clue to consolidation. 660 schools participated in the sectional tourneys. Despite the loss in membership of schools, records were set in both receipts and attendance. Gross receipts were $1,044,850.70 and the total attendance was 1,554,454. The Board of Control unanimously selected John Wilson of Bosse as the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude.
