Crispus Attucks of Indianapolis with a craftsman like manner won its third state championship in the past five years by outscoring Logansport and Kokomo. In the afternoon tilt against the Berries they won 76-50 and at night ran over the Wildcats 92-54. The tall Tigers controlled the backboards in both games which was a great advantage. In their two games they hit .470 from the floor. In the first afternoon game, Logansport against Crispus Attucks, the two clubs were even at the first quarter 11-11. Starting the second quarter the Tigers hit five of seven field attempts scoring eleven straight points to open up a margin of 31-20 at half-time. Attucks players continued their assault on the basket and went into the fourth quarter leading 53-32. Both clubs blazed away 71 times from the field with Crispus Attucks hitting 34 and Logansport 20. The second afternoon game found the Kokomo Wildcats taking on the New Albany Bulldogs. At the end of the first quarter the Wildcats held a 19-13 lead but in the second quarter the Bulldogs came back strong and trailed by only 2 points 32-30. In the third and fourth quarters both clubs played on even terms with the score tied 56-56 at the end of the regulation time. New Albany took the tip-off at the start of the overtime and controlled the ball for 2 minutes and 42 seconds. During this interim the Bulldogs had three shots at the basket before losing the ball. With 11 seconds to go the Wildcats called time to arrange their strategy. They maneuvered the ball for a shot which missed but grabbed the rebound and blazed away with another one to win 58-56. All ten players of the championship Tiger squad broke into the scoring column during the final game when Crispus Attucks ran over Kokomo. Quarter scores were in favor of the champs all the way leading 21-9 and 47-21 at half time. The third quarter ended 69-38 and final score 92-54. Individual scoring performance went to Kokomo's Jimmy Rayl who dropped in 114 points during the last four games along the tournament frail. He decisively eclipsed the old record of 106 points. Besides gaining scoring honors, Rayl was unanimously selected the winner of the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude by the Board of Control. In sectional play a total of 710 schools were entered. Gross receipts and attendance were up slightly over 1958. The paid attendance for the 85 tourneys was 1,508,962 and gross receipts $968,343.57. The increase in gross receipts was clue to an increase in ticket prices for sectional play.
