At. St. Vincent our grade eight class pulls you in with their version of Mendes’ “Nothing Holding Me Back”. Although this class excels at piano, once they voted for Mendes as their CBC song, they applied their keyboard skills to barred instruments. They felt this was a song that they could better communicate through a rhythmic drive. We divided the pitched percussion so that all who wished to play could do so. Unfortunately, once we listened to our recording, we agreed that only the boomwhacker percussive sounds were being picked up through the iPod and not the pitches; we abandoned the barred instruments for the recording. Those who chose keyboards support the strong vocals and the cajon keeps the beat. As if this wasn’t creative enough, they decided to choreograph a dance. I think you’ll agree that when it comes to this independent group, there is “Nothing Holding” them back!
